How to manually connect iOS devices to your DEP account

You have iOS devices that were not obtained through a DEP dealer and want to retrospectively make them DEP devices and manage them via MDM. This How To shows you how to configure the devices for DEP, so you can take advantage of the benefits (advanced theft protection, automatic set up, supervising) that DEP has to offer.


Apple’s Device Enrollment Program (DEP) offers the possibility for quick and uncomplicated connection of iOS devices into your firm’s IT. For a long time DEP could only be used on devices that were purchased from an authorised DEP dealer. (You can find how to connect these devices here.)

It has now become possible, however, to manually register iOS devices from version 11 for DEP. We’ll show you how to do that in the following.


  • Download the Apple Configurator 2.5 (or later) onto your Apple Mac. The configurator is available as a free download in the Mac AppStore.
  • Connect the iOS device to the Mac via USB and start Apple Configurator 2.
  • Select the device in the Apple Configurator 2 and click  on Prepare (arrow in illus.).

  • Make the following settings under Prepare Devices:

  • Click on Next to proceed.
  • In the next window, keep the server selection on New Server and again click on Next to confirm.

  • When an error notification appears (see illus.), ignore it and click on Next.

  • In the next step, select the SSL certificate for the Cortado server. If you are using a proxy server (with the Cortado Proxy Extension) select the SSL certificate of the proxy server.
  • Click on Next to proceed.

  • In the next step, enter the Apple ID that you used to set up the DEP.

  • After completing setup in the Apple Configurator 2 you will be able to locate the device in the DEP portal.
  • Regardless whether you have configured in the DEP portal for new devices to be assigned to an MDM server, you still have to manually assign the device to your Cortado server.
