How to remove a supervised iOS/iPadOS device from the administration

If an Apple device is no longer to be managed with Cortado MDM and removed from the Apple Business Manager, various steps must be carried out in a specific order.

Aim

In this article, we will show you how to remove managed Apple devices from the Cortado MDM administration, reset the devices and delete them in the Apple Business Manager.

Implementation

Be sure to follow the sequence of the individual steps described below so that communication between the devices, the Cortado administration portal and the Apple Business Manager can continue as long as necessary and the separation of the individual components can be completed.

1. Remove the MDM server in Apple Business Manager

  • Log in to Apple Business Manager and open the device management (left arrow in illus.).
  • Select the desired device (middle arrow in illus.).
  • Then click in the menu (upper right) on Unassign Device Management (right arrow in illus.).
Note! Under no circumstances should the device be removed from the organization at this stage. If this has already been done, please refer to the note at the bottom of the page.

Note! If you have accidentally removed the device from your organization before disconnecting it from the MDM server, you must perform a hard reset to put the device into recovery mode. You can find out how to do this in Apple's user manual here for iOS and here for iPadOS.
