How to defer iOS system updates for supervised devices

Does your firm use special apps that may not be compatible with a new iOS version? In this How To we’d like to show you how you can delay software updates up to 90 days for iOS supervised devices.

Aim

The aim is to defer an upcoming iOS update on your supervised devices. A policy is created for this purpose. The policy works by delaying the appearance of software updates for the user. The user only sees the software update when a specified number of days have elapsed after the software update release.

Implementation

  • Select Administration→ Policies in the Administration Portal.
  • Click on the plus button to create a new Policy (arrow in illus.).

  • Then select iOS/iPadOS.
  • Keep the supervised devices enrollment method (arrow in the illus.).

  • Check the checkbox
  • Defer software updates for … Days (1-90) (left arrow in illus.).
  • Then, under OS update delay (in days) specify the number of days you would like to defer the update (right arrow in illus.).

This delays the visibility of software updates for users. This means that users only see that an update is available after the specified number of days have passed since it was published. As soon as the update becomes visible, the user can download and install it independently. The update is not forced. You can find out how to force an update in our help article How to force OS updates for supervised iOS devices.
